ACTCAD LAYOPP Layer Operation Guide
10-Mar-2025
LAYOPP (Layer Operation):
LAYOPP (Layer Operation) allows the user to transfer or duplicate selected drawing entities to a different layer using a small dialog box. The command presents two operation choices — Move and Copy — and a dropdown to pick the target layer. After confirming, entities are either reassigned to the target layer (Move) or duplicated onto the target layer while leaving the originals in place (Copy).
Dialog fields:
- SELECT OPERATION — Choose the action to perform:
- Move: Change the selected entities' layer property to the chosen target layer (no duplicate is created).
- Copy: Create duplicates of the selected entities on the chosen target layer; the originals remain on their original layer.
- SELECT LAYER — Choose the target layer from the list. If the target layer does not yet exist, create it first using the Layer Manager (or the LAYER command), then rerun LAYOPP.
- OK / Cancel — Confirm or cancel the operation.
Procedure:
- Start the command: Type LAYOPP at the command line and press Enter (or launch the command from the menu/ribbon if provided).
- Select entities: Click or window-select the entities you want to operate on. Press Enter to confirm selection.
- Dialog appears: The Layer Operation dialog box opens asking for operation and target layer.
- Choose operation: Select Move or Copy from the SELECT OPERATION dropdown.
- Choose target layer: Pick the destination layer from the SELECT LAYER dropdown. If the layer isn’t available, create it first via Layer Manager or the LAYER command.
- Confirm: Click OK to apply the operation or Cancel to abort.
- Verify result:
- If you chose Move — the selected entities are now assigned to the target layer and no longer exist on the original layer.
- If you chose Copy — duplicates appear on the target layer while the originals remain on the original layer (they occupy the same coordinates, so they will overlap).
- Check visually: To confirm the difference between Move and Copy, temporarily freeze or turn off the original layer:
- After Copy — original layer still shows the original entities; toggling it off will still show the copies on the target layer.
- After Move — toggling off the original layer will hide those entities because they were moved.
- Undo if needed: Use Ctrl+Z or the UNDO command to revert the last operation.

Conclusion
LAYOPP is a quick and simple tool for reorganizing or duplicating drawing entities across layers. Use Move when you want to reassign ownership of entities to another layer without leaving duplicates. Use Copy when you need identical geometry on another layer while preserving the originals. To confirm the difference, freeze or turn off the original layer after the operation — moved entities will disappear from the original layer, copied entities will remain.
